A journey in the history of a hamlet in high Maira Valley, a very jewel in the Occitan valleys. A place which preserve its strong identity, made up with traditions, music, natural and atistical beauties. The perfect place to relax and to make peace with the nature under the Mounts Chersogno and Pelvo d’Elva control

DAY 1:

arrive at 9:00 a.m. Visit of the church in Elva, where it’s possible to admire the beautiful frescoes of the Flemish painter Hans Clemer and the stone baptismal font (1400) of the siblings Zabreri. Visit of the Pels (Caviè) Museum: a place which tells the history of hair’s pickers of Elva, who made wigs. These wigs were sold in the whole Europe. After lunch, visit of a cheese factory and tasting of the typical cheeses like “Toma d’Elva”.

DAY 2:

daily mountain hike with a natural tour guide. You will have the possibility to walk on the paths around Elva, in order to discover this beautiful places to a crawl (you can decide a hike according to the difficulty and the itinerary).

A SPAS PER LOU VIOL (path that can be interrupted at different points, shortening the length and the difference in height)

Difference in height: 1100 m Duration: 8h Difficulty: EE Km: 30km Brief description of what you can see along the way: This route develops completely in the Elva Valley on the ancient streets of communication, which were used by the inhabitants of Elva and touches many of the small and picturesque hamlets of the municipality. Each hamlet hides different secrets: characteristic stone columns, nineteenth-century frescoes, medieval chapels, toponyms of Jewish origin, etc … you will have the feeling to be in a place where the time has stopped

COLLE OF THE BICOCCA

Difference in height: 750 m Duration: 2h30 Difficulty: E Km: 4.5 Brief description of what you can see along the way: – some frescoes (two of them by Gauteri) and stone columns in the hamlets of Dao and Castes. The villages of Elva were rich in watermills, some of them are still visible. – wide open spaces on alpine pastures and a unique 360° view on the valleys – The Valle Varaita and the King of Stone of the Cozie Alps: Monviso – The Bicocca pass is a transit point of the “Strada dei Cannoni”, an ancient military route which was built in the 18th century by the engineer Ignazio Bertola (he’s also author of “The Citadel of Alexandria”, the forts of Exilles and of Fenestrelle )

FROM STROPPO BORGATA PASCHERO (1090 M S.L.M) ARRIVAL TO ELVA (1639 M S.L.M.)

Difference in height: 785 m Duration: 3h30 Difficulty: E Km: 7 Brief description of what you can see along the way: We will start walking along the medieval road that connected the center of Stroppo with Elva. Along the way, in addition to enjoying the excellent view and the sound of cowbells we will meet: – the beautiful church of San Peyre, built during the twelfth century that has inside a series of frescoes, which are unique for their representations. They are dating back to the 13th and 16th centuries. – From the Bettone mount we can admire the unique view on the valley of Elva, on the Chersogno and the Pelvo: the Maira Valley symbols – the circular San Giovanni chapel situated on the homonymous col was built at the beginning of 16th century as a pylon then it became a chapel. – the Museum of Pels (Hair) in Serre hamlet of Elva that tells one of the typical itinerant works that made known the Valle Maira all around the world: harvesting and processing of hair. The parish church of Maria Vergine Assunta which guards a series of frescoes of the Flemish painter Hans Clemer.

FROM ELVA AND ARRIVAL IN SAN MICHELE DI PRAZZO (1333 M)

Difference in height: 300 m (the difference in altitude does not seem to be much, but the first part is demanding) Duration: 4h Difficulty: E Km: 9 Brief description of what you can see along the way: – some frescoes (two of them by Gauteri) In the hamlets of Dao, Molino and Chiosso and stone columns. The villages of Elva were rich in watermills, some of them are still visible. -Covered passages, round columns, stone portals and the remains of a mill in Castiglione hamlet. – The parish church of San Michele Arcangelo which still preserves the medieval structures and the old seat of the San Michele Town Hall (today the La Tano di Grich inn). San Michele di Prazzo has been an independent municipality until 1928 with more than a thousand inhabitants. It was annexed to Ussolo and Prazzo and recognized as the municipality of Prazzo. Return to Elva.

CAMOSCERE LAKE (ring route)

Difference in height: 1150 m Duration: 5h Difficulty: E Km: 14 Brief description of what you can see along the way: – Alpine huts and large pastures – The small Matterhorn of Valle Maira: the mount Chersogno and its neighbor Pelvo d’Elva. Two mountains of 3000 meters high, which are enchant for their majesty. – The Camoscere lake with the homonymous bivouac and the abandoned barracks that sometimes offer hospitality to curious steinbocks. It’s not rare to come across these animals. You walk up the same route of the Colle della Bicocca and then you enter in the Conca del Lupo, climb the coast of the Rocca dell’Asino and you get to the Lake Camoscere, with a fantastic view of the Pelvo d’Elva and Monte Chersogno. Descent into the Gias Vecchio valley.
