An exciting half-day excursion starting from downtown Turin to discover Sacra di San Michele, known worldwide for having inspired Umberto Eco’s The Name of the Rose and then the film which starred Sean Connery.
Considered one of the most important examples of Romanesque architecture in Europe, the Sacra was founded on top of a mountain, overlooking a breathtaking panorama over the Alps and the valley. In order to reach the so-called “Doorway of the Zodiac,” the visitor has to climb 243 steps but once at the top, the view is unique.
Enjoy a guided tour to discover the whimsical “Zodiac Door,” a 12th-century doorway sculpted with putti (cherubs) pulling each other’s hair, the Staircase of the Dead, a steep stone staircase with a huge 18-meter high pillar that supports the floor of the church above and the tower of the “Bell’Alda,” with an astonishing view of the Valley and the “Via Francigena.”
